Are VA disability payments tax-free?
Yes. Compensation is tax-free monthly pay for disabilities caused or worsened by service (38 U.S.C. §§ 1110, 1131). The amounts in the table are the gross monthly figures before any other adjustments the VA may apply.

When do dependents increase the monthly rate?
Dependents add to the monthly rate only when the combined rating is 30 percent or higher. The table shows the veteran-alone amount at every level and the with-spouse amount starting at 30 percent. Additional children or other dependents may further increase the rate according to the VA schedule.
The combined rating itself is calculated using whole-person math under 38 C.F.R. § 4.25. A calculator that applies those rules is available on the combined rating calculator page.
When do the rates change?
The rates shown are effective December 1, 2025. The next cost-of-living adjustment is scheduled for December 1, 2026. Historical and current official tables are published by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

What other factors can affect the amount paid?
Special monthly compensation, total disability based on individual unemployability (TDIU), and other statutory benefits can increase the amount above the basic rates. TDIU pays at the 100 percent rate when service-connected conditions prevent substantially gainful work and the schedular thresholds are met (one condition at least 60 percent or combined at least 70 percent with one at least 40 percent) (38 C.F.R. § 4.16).
